  1. Step 1:

    Step 1

Prep the ingredients before you start. Cut the beef heart into long strips.

  2. Step 2:

    Step 5

First, pour the oil into the cauldron and heat it over high heat until very hot.

  6. Step 6:

    Step 6

Add the heart in batches so the meat sears quickly and doesn't drop the cauldron's temperature. Fry the heart until browned and crisp.

  7. Step 7:

Next, add the onion, stir, and fry until golden. Then season with spices to taste.

  8. Step 8:

    Step 8

Add the black bell pepper to the cauldron, stir, and add more spices. Let the pepper cook for about five minutes.

  9. Step 9:

    Step 9

Next, add the tomatoes and do the same. Cook for another five minutes, then lower the heat to a minimum, since the rest of the cooking will be a gentle braise.

  10. Step 10:

    Step 10

Add the artichokes, nestling them down into the cauldron.

  11. Step 11:

    Step 11

Then arrange the sweet potato and potatoes on top of everything in the cauldron. Cover and braise until the potatoes are done, about 25 minutes.

  12. Step 12:

    Step 12

After that time, the dish is ready.

  • A dinner made from unusual vegetables that all come together on one table and in one dish. Even though these vegetables taste a bit different from the everyday ones we're used to, they all work beautifully together when cooked in a cauldron. Of course, you can swap any of them for the everyday version — purple potatoes for regular ones, and the sweet potato too. Don't treat this recipe as exact. It's perfect for Halloween, and fun to make with kids. The dish itself comes out delicious, since despite their unusual colors, the vegetables taste normal. One note: artichoke is a peculiar ingredient — it doesn't have a strong flavor and barely affects the final result, so you can save your money and skip it. All the vegetables develop the most flavor cooked in a cauldron over an open fire, but you can make this in an ordinary home kitchen, too.
