  • Start with the sauce. Melt the butter in a skillet, add the onion, and sauté it. Add the tomatoes and simmer for a couple of minutes. Stir in the chopped basil, cover the pan, and simmer for another 7 to 8 minutes. Add the vinegar, sugar, water, salt, and pepper, and simmer 2 to 3 minutes more. Then take the pan off the heat and let the sauce cool. Blend it smooth in a blender or run it through a meat grinder. Now for the meat: mix the ground beef with the finely chopped onion, herbs, and garlic. Season with salt and pepper and knead it well. Roll the mixture into small round meatballs. Set a skillet over the heat and add oil. Once the oil is hot, gently lower in the meatballs and fry them on all sides. When they're done, transfer them to a platter, pour the sauce into the pan, and bring it to a boil, stirring. Pour the sauce into a gravy boat and serve everything together.
