  1. Step 1:

    Step 1

How do you make breadcrumbs in a skillet? Get your ingredients ready. All you need is the bread you'll turn into crumbs. Any kind works: white, rye, or a sandwich loaf. The richer the bread, the more tender and airy your breadcrumbs will be. Fresh bread is best, but this is also a great way to use up yesterday's stale loaf. I used a plain (unsweetened) loaf.

  2. Step 2:

    Step 2

Cut the bread into slices, then cut the slices into small cubes. Try to keep them roughly the same size.

  3. Step 3:

    Step 3

Heat a dry skillet and spread out the bread cubes. It's best not to add the loose crumbs along with the cubes — they dry out faster and can start to burn before the cubes are ready. Over medium heat, toast the bread until crisp, stirring with a spatula so it doesn't scorch.

  4. Step 4:

    Step 4

Turn off the heat and let the toasted cubes cool and harden.

  5. Step 5:

    Step 5

Grind the toasted cubes into crumbs using a coffee grinder or other food processor. Your breadcrumbs are ready. Store them in a glass jar or a paper bag in a dry place.

    Step 6

Still, it's best not to store breadcrumbs too long — over time they lose their flavor and can turn bitter or go damp. Just make a fresh batch whenever you need it.

  • You can always grab a box of breadcrumbs at any store and save yourself the trouble of making them at home. But a homemade batch is in a different league when it comes to quality and flavor. Commercial breadcrumbs are often made from leftover, unsold bread that may no longer be fresh and can have an off smell. Store-bought products also tend to contain preservatives to keep them from spoiling, which isn't ideal for your health. On top of that, breadcrumbs you make yourself from bread cost less than the ones at the store.
