Sweet French Toast

A great breakfast! If you've got a day-old (or two-day-old) loaf sitting around and aren't sure what to do with it, this is the recipe for you. Sweet fried bread like this has always been — and I think always will be — a family favorite. It's perfect for a lazy Sunday breakfast, an afternoon snack, or something to pack for a picnic. Because it comes out sweet, kids love it. The dish is dead simple and wonderfully budget-friendly. It's one of those recipes handed down from childhood — the kind our moms and grandmas made for us, that we now make for our own kids, and that they'll probably go on to make with a smile. And it's simple enough to cook together with children, who always love helping out in the kitchen. This just might become a child's very first culinary masterpiece.

  • For these delicious toasts, use a day-old loaf. It should be slightly dry so the finished pieces hold their shape well. Cut the loaf into slices about 1/2 inch (1–1.5 cm) thick. In a deep bowl, pour in the milk, add the two eggs, and whisk everything together well — a whisk works best. Pour a little vegetable oil into a hot skillet. Dip each slice of bread into the egg-milk mixture and lay it in the hot pan. Fry for a couple of minutes, then flip with a spatula and fry the other side another 2–3 minutes, until both sides are golden and appetizing. Line a plate with paper towels and set the finished toasts on it to blot off any excess oil. While they're still hot, sprinkle sugar or powdered sugar over the whole surface. Delicious, golden, fragrant toast is ready! You can also drizzle them with sweetened condensed milk or serve with jam, preserves, or berry sauce. They're wonderful with tea, milk, or a fruit drink. Enjoy!
