Skillet Cabbage with Ground Beef and Rice
Quick, easy, tasty, and filling — a dish the whole family will love! This skillet cabbage with ground beef and rice is a bit like lazy cabbage rolls, but it comes together much more simply and quickly. And honestly, the flavor only benefits. Great for a weeknight dinner.
Cooking method
-
Step 1:
How do you make skillet cabbage with ground beef and rice? Start by gathering your ingredients. You can use any kind of ground meat — pork, beef, chicken, or a blend. Reach for long-grain parboiled rice; it stays fluffy as it cooks and is less likely to turn mushy. Feel free to adjust the ratio of rice, cabbage, and meat to your taste.
-
Step 2:
Peel the onion and carrot and rinse them under running water. Finely chop the onion and grate the carrot on the large holes of a box grater.
-
Step 3:
Pour a little vegetable oil into a hot skillet and sauté the onion and carrot over low heat for 3–4 minutes.
-
Step 4:
Add the ground beef to the pan. Break it up and stir it into the vegetables, cooking everything together until the meat is no longer pink.
-
Step 5:
Meanwhile, prep the cabbage. Peel off the bruised outer leaves and cut the head in half. Thinly shred as much cabbage as you need.
-
Step 6:
Add the cabbage to the meat in the pan. Stir, cover, and let it sit for 2–3 minutes. It will start to soften and cook down.
-
Step 7:
In a separate cup, stir the tomato paste into the water. Add the rinsed rice to the skillet and pour the tomato mixture over it.
-
Step 8:
Season to taste with pressed garlic, salt, and spices — ground pepper and dried basil or oregano work well. Stir everything together and cover. Cook over low heat for 20–25 minutes. The rice will absorb the liquid and turn tender. Taste the rice and add a splash more water if it needs it.
-
Step 9:
Take the finished dish off the heat, but leave it covered for another 15 minutes to steam through. Serve it hot. Enjoy!

- To keep onions from stinging your eyes, rinse the onion and the knife under cold water. Your cutting board won't hold onto the onion smell if you rub it with a piece of lemon before slicing.
