Salad with Ham, Tomatoes, Croutons, and Beans
Quick, simple, made from ordinary ingredients, and very tasty! This salad with ham, tomatoes, croutons, and beans is one of our family's favorites. Its simplicity, speed, and easy-to-find ingredients make it indispensable for holidays. I sometimes make it just because, to treat myself and my loved ones.
Cooking method
-
Step 1:
How do you make a salad with ham, tomatoes, croutons, and beans? Gather the ingredients. You can replace the ham with smoked pork loin or another smoked meat. Use canned or raw beans - the raw ones need to be boiled first. For the salad, it's best to use rye croutons flavored with ham, meat, or bacon; tomato-and-herb croutons or plain ones work too. Instead of store-bought, you can make the croutons yourself.
-
Step 2:
Drain the canned beans in a colander and let the liquid run off. Dry the beans. If you're using raw beans, boil them first. How do you boil string beans? Bring water to a boil, add a little salt, and drop in the beans (no need to thaw). Cook for about 3 minutes, then drain in a colander and let the water run off. Cool the beans before adding them to the salad - a salad made from warm ingredients can spoil quickly.
-
Step 3:
Cut the ham into long strips.
-
Step 4:
Wash and dry the tomatoes. Cut them into long strips too.
-
Step 5:
In a salad bowl, combine the ham, tomatoes, string beans, and croutons. If you're not serving the salad right away, it's better not to add the croutons yet - otherwise they'll get soggy and soak up all the salad's juices. Add the croutons just before serving.
-
Step 6:
Dress the salad with mayonnaise.
-
Step 7:
Mix everything.
-
Step 8:
Serve the salad right away, before the croutons get soggy. Enjoy!
- You can add garlic pressed through a garlic press to the salad. I don't, since garlic easily overpowers the taste of the ham. Ham is fairly delicate, yet salty and lean, which makes it a handy ingredient even for low-calorie vegetable salads. Among all the tasty holiday and everyday salads, one with ham is honestly among the easiest to make. Along with chicken breast, ham is one of the most popular salad ingredients. We turn to a salad like this far more often during the holidays, since its flavor is excellent.
- The salad looks neat and pretty if you cut all the ingredients into pieces of the same size and shape (cubes, for example).
- Choose juicy but firm tomatoes. Soft ones don't hold their shape well - they'll turn to mush as you slice and assemble them and spoil the look of the dish.
- It's better to make the mayonnaise yourself - it'll be tastier and better for you. See some interesting homemade mayonnaise recipes here. You can also use sour cream or plain yogurt as the dressing - on their own or mixed with mayonnaise in any ratio you like, which lowers the calorie count.
