Boiled Mackerel — Quick and Delicious
Very tasty, juicy, fragrant, and good for you! Boiled mackerel is a recipe that shows you how to make a wonderful fish dish quickly and deliciously — in just about 10 minutes. This fish is perfect for salads and appetizers, and you can also serve it on its own, with or without a side.
Cooking method
-
Step 1:
How do you cook mackerel quickly and deliciously? Gather the ingredients. If the mackerel was frozen, thaw it first. Then clean and gut it, taking special care to remove the black film inside the belly cavity — it's very bitter. Rinse the fish well and pat it dry with paper towels.
-
Step 2:
Pour 1.5 liters of water into a saucepan and add the salt and bay leaves. Squeeze in the juice of half a lemon, then drop the squeezed-out half into the water too. Wash the dill, dry it, and chop it finely. Add it to the pot as well. I used frozen dill — but use whatever herbs you like. Set the pot over high heat and bring it to a boil.
-
Step 3:
Meanwhile, cut the mackerel into serving pieces. You can also cook the whole fish or larger pieces, depending on what you plan to use it for.
-
Step 4:
Once the contents of the pot come to a boil, add the mackerel pieces. Wait for it to return to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer the fish for 8–10 minutes. There's no need to cook it any longer — that way the fish stays juicy. If you're cooking a whole fish, increase the time to 15 minutes.
-
Step 5:
Arrange the mackerel on a plate and garnish with lemon slices. Serve it as a main dish, with or without a side. If you're using it for salads or appetizers, let the fish cool first.
-
Step 6:
Enjoy your meal!
- Keep in mind that the quality and flavor of the finished dish depend heavily on properly thawing the ingredients. To avoid mistakes and pick the best method, see our article on thawing.
- Since everyone's tolerance for saltiness, sweetness, bitterness, spiciness, acidity, and heat is different, always add spices and seasonings to your own taste! If you're using a particular seasoning for the first time, keep in mind that some are especially easy to overdo (chili pepper, for example).
