Braised Cabbage with Sausages in a Slow Cooker
Deliciously tender cabbage braised with sausages in a slow cooker. It cooks faster than on the stovetop. Be sure to do it in two stages—sauté uncovered first, then braise with the lid on. The cabbage cooks down beautifully, turning soft with a gentle tomato tang and a mouthwatering aroma, right alongside the sausages.
Cooking method
-
Step 1:
Let's gather the ingredients from the list—a head of cabbage weighing about 2 pounds (1 kg), peel one carrot and a couple of onions, and stir a tablespoon of tomato paste into about 1/2 cup (100 ml) of water.
-
Step 2:
Cut the onion into dice.
-
Step 3:
Set the slow cooker to "Sauté" or, as on this model, the chicken setting, for 12 minutes.
-
Step 4:
Pour the vegetable oil into the slow cooker pot and add the onion. Cook the onion for a couple of minutes.
-
Step 5:
While the onion cooks, grate the carrot on the coarse holes of a box grater.
-
Step 6:
Add the carrot to the onion in the pot, along with the salt and spices, and keep cooking, stirring, for 5 minutes.
-
Step 7:
Next, cut the sausages into pieces.
-
Step 8:
After 5 minutes, add the sausages to the onion and carrot in the pot and stir.
-
Step 9:
Then shred the cabbage on a mandoline or with a knife.
-
Step 10:
Add the cabbage to the pot toward the end of the sauté stage.
-
Step 11:
Gently stir the cabbage into the rest of the ingredients. About now the sauté program will finish and shut off.
-
Step 12:
All that's left is to add a bay leaf and pour in the tomato paste stirred into water.
-
Step 13:
Now close the lid tightly and start a cook or braise program—on this model, you can use the soup setting for 25 minutes.
-
Step 14:
Once it beeps, release the steam, lift the lid, transfer the hot braised cabbage and sausages to a serving bowl, and bring it to the table.
