Cabbage Base for Winter Solyanka

A signature preserve for winter that won't leave anyone indifferent — so tasty! I just love putting up preserves that turn out to be downright indispensable come winter. This cabbage solyanka base is good not only for making soup but also as a filling for hand pies or a savory pie. Try it once and I'm sure this recipe will stay in your cookbook forever ;)

  • Finely shred the cabbage. Put it in the slow cooker insert and set the "Stew" (Braise) setting for 45 minutes. It's best to add the salt and tomato paste near the very end, about 7 minutes before the cabbage is done. When it's ready, spoon the mixture into jars and set the lids on top (don't seal them all the way yet). Now sterilize the filled jars: line the bottom of a pot with a cloth towel, stand a jar on top, turn on the heat, and bring it to a boil. Let it boil for no more than 20 minutes. All that's left is to seal the jars, wait for them to cool, and move them to a cool place. Enjoy vegetable dishes any time of year!
