How to Freeze Brussels Sprouts
A simple, fast way to freeze them at home! With this method you can freeze Brussels sprouts in about an hour, prep and blanching included. They store neatly and are easy to grab as needed for all kinds of dishes.
Cooking method
-
Step 1:
How do you freeze Brussels sprouts? Measure out the ingredients from the list. Prep the sprouts: pull off the outer leaves, wash them, and trim the stem ends.
-
Step 2:
Set a large pot on the stove, fill it with water, and bring to a boil. Salt the water and drop in the lemon wedges.
-
Step 3:
Add the prepped Brussels sprouts to the boiling water in batches and cook for about five minutes from the time it returns to a boil.
-
Step 4:
Drain the sprouts in a sieve and plunge them into ice water (I just held them under cold running water). Let the excess water drain off.
-
Step 5:
Transfer the sprouts to paper towels or a kitchen towel and dry them as thoroughly as you can.
-
Step 6:
Now spread the sprouts in a single layer on something like a tray or baking sheet. Put them in the freezer and freeze until solid. You can leave them overnight.
-
Step 7:
Gather the frozen Brussels sprouts into a bag or plastic container and store them in the freezer. There's no need to thaw them before cooking — you can add them straight to any dish, like a soup or a hot main. If you want to use them in a salad, then yes, thaw them first.
- In our family we put up everything we can for the winter, and freezing Brussels sprouts is something we do fairly often.
- What can you make with frozen Brussels sprouts? Besides the soup mentioned above, you can add them to just about anything — a morning omelet, a casserole, a pie or hand pies. Toss them into the sauté for a vegetable or meat stew, or make a warm salad.
- Vegetables are best washed with a brush or a stiff sponge under running water.
- It's handy to label your home-frozen packages with what's inside and the date (use a pencil, since pen ink can run). That way you'll always know the storage time and can easily find what you need in a packed freezer.
