Potato, ground meat, and cheese casserole in the oven
A childhood favorite with a fragrant cheesy crust! This oven-baked casserole of potato, ground meat, and cheese is a truly perfect dish: juicy meat, fluffy mashed potatoes, and lots of melted cheese on top. Who's going to turn down a piece of that? It's a handy choice for a hearty dinner — meat and side dish in one!
Cooking method
-
Step 1:
How do you make a potato casserole? Gather the ingredients on the list. Any ground meat works — beef, pork, chicken, turkey. Mine is a beef-pork mix.
-
Step 2:
Wash and peel the potatoes well. If they're large, cut them into small pieces. Cover them with cold water and set them to cook over low heat. Use good filtered or bottled water — its taste affects the mash. Cook the potatoes for 25 minutes, salting at the end.
-
Step 3:
While the potatoes cook, fry the ground meat. Peel the onion and cut it into small cubes.
-
Step 4:
Heat a skillet and pour in the vegetable oil. Add the onion and fry it, stirring, for about 5 minutes, until translucent.
-
Step 5:
Add the ground meat to the skillet. Break up all the big clumps with a spatula until it's even. Season the meat with salt and pepper, and add any seasonings you like.
-
Step 6:
Fry the meat, covered, over low heat for 15 minutes.
-
Step 7:
When the potatoes are done, drain them. Warm the milk until hot and pour it into the pot of potatoes. Mash them with a potato masher. Add the butter and mash again well.
-
Step 8:
Take a baking dish and spread the cooked meat as the first layer.
-
Step 9:
Spread a layer of mashed potatoes on top.
-
Step 10:
Grate the cheese on the coarse side of a grater.
-
Step 11:
Sprinkle the grated cheese over the casserole.
-
Step 12:
Bake the casserole at 350°F (180°C) for about 40 minutes. The cheese should melt and turn golden.
- Our favorite mashed-potato-and-meat casserole takes on a savory edge thanks to the cheese crust. Very tasty! You can add various vegetables to the meat as it fries — carrot, celery, bell pepper.
- Keep in mind that ovens vary. Your temperature and time may differ from what's given here. For any baked dish to turn out well, make use of the helpful information on how ovens behave!
- To give the oven time to reach temperature, turn it on ahead (10-20 minutes before you start cooking).
- Any heatproof dish works for this recipe. If you use a silicone mold, you don't need to grease it; for metal, ceramic, or glass dishes, it's best to lightly oil them so the casserole doesn't stick.
