Baked pasta and egg casserole
A delicious pasta-and-egg casserole for breakfast. You can serve this pasta casserole as a full, tasty breakfast, or offer it as a side dish at dinner. It's very simple and quick to make, and you can even use yesterday's leftover pasta.
Cooking method
-
Step 1:
Gather the ingredients for the pasta casserole. You can use any pasta for this recipe (both the type of pasta and its shape), but durum wheat pasta is best. I used large (grade SO) eggs and 3.2% milk, but that doesn't really matter — you could use three small eggs and lower-fat milk. Salt and other seasonings to taste. Have an oven-safe dish ready.
-
Step 2:
Put a pot of cold water on the heat. As soon as it boils, add salt. Add the dry pasta to the boiling water and cook it until done, following the package directions. Once the pasta is ready, drain it in a colander and let the water run off. Turn the oven on to preheat to 350°F (180°C). You can use pasta cooked earlier.
-
Step 3:
Wash the eggs with soap and pat them dry with a towel. Crack the eggs into a deep bowl one at a time and stir. Pour in the right amount of milk, add a little salt and, if you like, some dry seasonings. Stir the mixture with a whisk until everything is combined. There's no need to whip it.
-
Step 4:
Grease your chosen baking dish with butter (butter makes it tastier and easier to lift out). Put the cooked pasta into the dish. A shallow dish is better so the pasta sits fully in the egg-and-milk mixture. Pour the egg-and-milk mixture over the pasta in the baking dish. You can also dot the top of the casserole with pieces of butter for a more golden finish. Put the dish in the preheated oven for 40 minutes.
-
Step 5:
Serve the finished pasta casserole hot. It'll brighten up any breakfast, and it also makes a wonderful, hearty dinner.
- You can make a sweet version of the casserole by adding sugar to the egg-and-milk mixture and dusting it with powdered sugar when serving. Kids love this sweet pasta casserole. You can also use soft or hard cheese in it, sprinkling it on before baking for an appetizing cheesy crust.
