Homemade Nutella-style chocolate spread

A wonderful topping for your morning toast — sweet and delicious! This chocolate spread comes out very tasty and silky. It isn't all that much like real Nutella — it's closer to chocolate pudding or a chocolate custard. But everyone's taste is different, and the spread turned out so good — make it and enjoy!

Cooking method

Cooking time: 30 min
  1. Step 1:

    Step 1

The ingredients (I add more sugar, since almost everyone in my family has a sweet tooth).

  2. Step 2:

    Step 2

In a saucepan, mix the sugar, flour, cocoa powder, and a pinch of salt. Keep in mind that the flour and cocoa are measured as heaping spoonfuls. You can use more flour if you want a thicker spread, but I'd advise experimenting carefully, adding it gradually in small amounts. You can make a small trial batch and adjust the thickness — that is, the amount of flour — to your taste next time.

  3. Step 3:

    Step 3

Pour in the milk a little at a time, stirring constantly. Set the mixture over the heat and bring it to a boil, stirring.

  4. Step 4:

    Step 4

Chop the hazelnuts as finely as you can.

  5. Step 5:

    Step 5

As soon as the mixture comes to a boil, add the butter and the chopped nuts.

  6. Step 6:

    Step 6

Stir thoroughly, bring back to a boil, and cook for another 2–3 minutes — the mixture should thicken nicely. The cooking time is approximate; it may take a little more or less, so go by the consistency.

  7. Step 7:

    Step 7

Pour it into a suitable container and let it cool. Serve the spread with morning toast or pancakes. Enjoy!

  • You can use this spread for more than just toast — it also works for filling cake layers or serving alongside crêpes or pancakes. There are plenty of options.
