Noodles with Canned Stewed Meat (Tushonka)
A great option when you need to get dinner on the table fast. Noodles with tushonka — Russian-style canned stewed meat — are quick but very filling. And the more meat you add, the better, so don't feel you have to stop at one can. I also recommend pouring in a little water, even if there's already plenty in the can. That way the noodles end up with lots of tasty sauce.
Cooking method
-
Step 1:
Gather your ingredients. To make noodles with canned stewed meat, you'll need: noodles, a large can of beef stew (ideally one with less fat), ketchup or tomato paste, vegetable oil, dried thyme, dried marjoram, ground black pepper, and salt.
-
Step 2:
Boil the noodles in salted water until done, following the instructions on the package.
-
Step 3:
Drain the noodles in a colander.
-
Step 4:
Take the meat out of the can and break it into pieces. In the same pot you used for the noodles, heat the vegetable oil and add the stewed meat, noodles, ketchup, and dried herbs.
-
Step 5:
Season with salt and pepper and stir everything together. Pour in the liquid left over from the can. If there isn't any, add 100 ml of hot water to the pot instead. Stir gently. Cover and simmer for about 10 minutes.
-
Step 6:
Spoon the noodles with stewed meat onto plates and serve. You can sprinkle the finished dish with chopped fresh herbs — I used basil leaves. Enjoy!
- It's important to choose the right canned meat. Canned meats differ by how they're heat-treated — most often you'll find sterilized canned goods, though pasteurized ones exist too. They also vary by the ratio of meat to plant-based ingredients: meat (more than 60% meat ingredients); meat-and-vegetable (30% to 60% meat); and vegetable-and-meat (5% to 30% meat). For this dish it's best to choose the first kind, with more meat than fat. Canned meat usually comes in metal cans. The can should be smooth, with no dents, bulges, leaks, or rust. Those are signs the food was stored improperly and the seal may be compromised — the product could be spoiled, so it's best to pass on it. Some producers use glass jars, whose advantage is that you can clearly see the ratio of ingredients. A tin can, though, is lighter and won't break, which makes it handy to take camping.
