Latte Macchiato at Home
A famous coffee, but in an accessible, simple recipe! Making a real latte macchiato at home is easy as can be, even without an espresso machine. All you need on hand is a blender or mixer to froth the milk. The other steps just take a little care and following the recipe closely.
Cooking method
-
Step 1:
How do you make a latte macchiato at home? Gather the ingredients. If you have whole beans, grind them in a coffee grinder. If your coffee is already ground, measure out 1.5 tsp. Freshly ground coffee is usually more fragrant. The milk should be on the richer side, 3.2% fat or higher. I made two servings, so I doubled the ingredients.
-
Step 2:
Put the ground coffee in a cezve (Turkish coffee pot), add cold water, and set it over low heat. Stir and cook until the coffee just starts to come to a boil, but don't let it boil. Take the pot off the heat. If you like, you can bring it to the boiling point 2–3 more times, taking it off the heat each time.
-
Step 3:
Strain the finished strong coffee through a special filter bag or a fine sieve to remove the grounds. Pour the coffee back into a clean cezve and set it over the lowest heat again, just to keep it from cooling down.
-
Step 4:
Heat the milk to 120–160°F (50–70°C). It should be hot but not boiling — it needs to be cooler than the coffee. I checked the temperature with a kitchen thermometer. If you don't have one, just wait until light steam starts rising from the milk, then take it off the heat.
-
Step 5:
Froth the hot milk with a mixer or blender for about 4 minutes, until you have a stable, fluffy foam. If you have a French press, you can froth the milk in it by pumping the plunger up and down.
-
Step 6:
Carefully pour the frothed milk into a tall glass with a handle. Slowly pour the hot coffee on top in a thin stream. The coffee needs to be hotter than the frothed milk when you add it — only then, thanks to the difference in temperature and density, will it rise and settle in a layer between the milk and the foam.
-
Step 7:
Sprinkle the finished drink with ground cinnamon and serve right away. Enjoy!
- For making it, it's best to use filtered or bottled water with a neutral taste. If you use tap water, keep in mind that it can give the drink an unpleasant off-flavor.
- It helps to understand how a macchiato differs from a regular cappuccino, since the two coffees use the same ingredients.
