Simple, quick, and delicious — for holidays and everyday meals alike! What I love about this "Men's Whim" salad with chicken is that it uses just a handful of ingredients, yet the flavor is outstanding. You can build it in layers or simply mix everything together, dressing it with mayonnaise or sour cream!

Cooking method

  1. Step 1:

    Step 1

How do you make Men's Whim salad with chicken? Start by gathering the ingredients. Use any cheese you like, as long as it grates easily and tastes good.

  2. Step 2:

    Step 2

Cook the chicken fillet and eggs ahead of time. Boil the eggs for 7–8 minutes, then drain and cool them in cold water. Cover the chicken with water, bring to a boil, and cook for 25–30 minutes with a little salt. Let the meat cool.

  3. Step 3:

    Step 3

Peel the onion, rinse it in cold water, and chop it finely. In a small bowl, combine the vinegar and water, add the sugar, and stir. Pour this over the chopped onion and let it sit for 15–20 minutes to quick-pickle. Then drain off all the liquid.

  4. Step 4:

    Step 4

This salad is assembled in layers. Set a serving ring on the plate you'll serve it on. Cut the chicken into small pieces and spread it as the first layer on the bottom. Press it down lightly and spread with mayonnaise.

  5. Step 5:

    Step 5

Spread the pickled onion over the chicken. There's no need to add mayonnaise to the onion — it's juicy enough and there isn't much of it.

  6. Step 6:

    Step 6

Peel the boiled eggs and grate them on the coarse side of a grater. Add them as the next layer, press down lightly, and spread with mayonnaise.

  7. Step 7:

    Step 7

For the final layer, add the cheese grated on the fine side of a grater. Remove the serving ring and chill the salad in the refrigerator before serving. Garnish with fresh herbs. Enjoy!

  • It's better to make the mayonnaise yourself — it'll taste better and be healthier. You can also use sour cream or plain yogurt as a dressing instead of, or mixed with, mayonnaise in any ratio you like; this lightens up the dish.
  • Always wash eggs before using them — even a shell that looks clean can carry harmful bacteria. A food-safe wash and a brush work best.
  • Make salads only from fully chilled ingredients. Assembled while still warm, a salad can spoil quickly.
