Chak-Chak in a Frying Pan
An easy recipe for an irresistibly delicious Eastern sweet! I often pick up chak-chak — little fried dough pieces bound in honey syrup — at the store, but recently I decided to make it at home. As is so often the case, the homemade version turned out far better than anything store-bought. If you'd like to try making chak-chak yourself, here's how.
Cooking method
-
Step 1:
Flour, sugar, eggs, milk, honey, and refined sunflower oil — everything you need for chak-chak.
-
Step 2:
The ingredients for the dough.
-
Step 3:
Beat the eggs with the sugar (if you like, add a pinch of salt and about 50 g of butter), then add the flour and milk and knead into a dough. Use as little flour as you can get away with, so the dough doesn't turn out too stiff.
-
Step 4:
Let the dough rest for about 20 minutes.
-
Step 5:
Roll the dough into thin ropes and cut them into pieces — either about 1/4 inch (0.5 cm) or 1.5–2 inches (4–5 cm) long, whichever you prefer.
-
Step 6:
Fry the cut dough until light golden brown. It cooks very fast — just 1–2 minutes and it's done.
-
Step 7:
Rolling small balls in the palm of your hand is very easy to do.
-
Step 8:
Transfer the fried dough to a sieve or paper towels to drain off the excess oil.
-
Step 9:
For the honey caramel, melt the honey with the sugar over very low heat or in a double boiler.
-
Step 10:
Once it comes to a boil, cook the honey-sugar mixture until it thickens slightly.
-
Step 11:
Enjoy!
- To make this sweet, start by kneading all the ingredients above into a firm, smooth dough. Roll it into thin ropes, cut them into small pieces, and deep-fry them in oil, stirring constantly, until lightly golden. Next, simmer fresh honey with granulated sugar into a syrup. Mound the fried pieces on a serving plate and drizzle the honey-sugar syrup over the top. Let it cool and set, then serve. Enjoy!
