  • Elaborate mayonnaise salads are usually made for a holiday table. After a long day you don't feel like spending ages chopping, so simpler dishes win out. But if you just boil the eggs ahead of time, the rest takes no more than 10 minutes — and the family will be delighted by a "special occasion" dish on an ordinary day.
  • How do you make ham, egg, and tomato salad with cheese? Peel the casing off the ham and cut it into thin, short strips. Don't make the strips too long — they look nice but are awkward to eat. Peel the hard-boiled eggs and cut them into large cubes. Don't go too small here; big pieces dress up the salad and give it a festive look.
  • Wash the cherry tomatoes, pat them dry, and cut them into halves or quarters. Cut this way, they keep more of their juice and their good looks. You can swap in another small tomato variety.
  • Put all the prepped ingredients in a large bowl. Don't use a small plate — the ingredients need room to combine well while staying intact. You can transfer the finished salad to a pretty serving dish afterward.
  • Grate the hard cheese of your choice on the coarse side of a box grater and add it to the salad. Red onion is best here — it's milder and adds a nice pop of color. Peel it, wash it, dry it, and cut it into thin half-rings.
  • Season the salad with salt and pepper to your taste. Add the mayonnaise and toss gently, so you don't break up the eggs or mash the tomatoes.
  • Transfer the finished salad to a nice bowl and garnish with finely chopped dill and a sprig of mint. Serve right after tossing, before the tomatoes start to release their juice.
  • Enjoy!
  • Mayonnaise is better homemade — tastier and better for you. There are some good homemade mayo recipes worth trying. You can also dress this with sour cream or plain yogurt instead of mayonnaise, on their own or mixed with mayo in whatever ratio you like, which cuts the calories.
  • How do you hard-boil eggs? To keep them from cracking, start them in cold water over low heat. Boil for 9 minutes after the water comes to a boil, then transfer to cold water to cool — the sudden temperature change makes them easier to peel.
