"Royal" Layered Salad with Crab Sticks
A tasty, hearty, colorful salad with a grand name! The name says it all — this one will surely claim a place of honor on the holiday table. The star ingredient is crab sticks, which pair well with so many other foods that you can reinvent the salad every time. "Royal" is one of the most successful crab-stick salads, and its recipe deserves special attention.
Cooking method
-
Step 1:
Gather your ingredients. Of these, only the eggs and carrots need cooking.
-
Step 2:
Wash the eggs with soap first to keep any bacteria on the shell from getting into the dish. They should be at room temperature before cooking. Put them in a metal pot, cover with cold water, set over the heat, and cook for about 20 minutes from the time the water boils. Then drain, cover with hot water, and let the eggs cool. Peel and grate them.
-
Step 3:
The croutons can be store-bought or homemade from wheat bread. Homemade are better here, since store-bought croutons usually have added flavorings, while plain bread croutons taste only of bread and won't overpower the other ingredients. Cut wheat bread into small cubes and toast them on a dry sheet pan in the oven at 350°F (180°C) for 10 minutes.
-
Step 4:
Wash the carrots and boil them in their skins until tender. Cool, peel, and grate them.
-
Step 5:
Cut the crab sticks into small cubes with a knife. Peel the garlic and press a couple of cloves or mince them very finely.
-
Step 6:
You can build this as a layered salad or just toss everything in a bowl and top with croutons. For the layered version, start with the diced crab sticks. Coat them with a thin layer of mayonnaise. If the mayonnaise doesn't seem salty enough, you can lightly salt the layers.
-
Step 7:
Next, a layer of the grated boiled eggs. Coat with mayonnaise.
-
Step 8:
Then add the grated boiled carrot. Top with a thin layer of mayonnaise and sprinkle with the minced garlic.
-
Step 9:
Coat with mayonnaise.
-
Step 10:
Sprinkle with the grated hard cheese.
-
Step 11:
Another layer of mayonnaise. It's best to add the croutons to this salad right before serving, or they'll turn soggy and spoil the taste and look. Garnish with fresh herbs if you like, let it rest, and serve. Enjoy!
