Step 1:
Peel and chop the garlic and onion. Sauté them in the oil until softened and translucent.

Wash the tomatoes, peel them, and grate them on the coarse side of a grater right into the pan. Add the salt, sugar, and pepper. Simmer over medium heat for half an hour.

Stir in the basil at the end. Take it off the heat, let it sit for 10 minutes, then serve over spaghetti.
