Hibiscus (Karkade) Tea

A wonderful refreshing drink that's sure to perk you up! When I was in Egypt, the locals introduced me to a kind of tea called karkade. It's also known as the "drink of the pharaohs" and it's Egypt's national beverage. It pairs beautifully with any food, and its health benefits are remarkable. This "Sudanese rose" is packed with vitamins. It quenches your thirst on a sweltering summer day, and in winter it warms you right up. The brewing method they shared with me in Egypt is very simple.

Once you've enjoyed your red tea, you can even eat the hibiscus petals, which are rich in vitamin C. The second method is hot: take a glass, add 2 teaspoons of the tea, and pour over boiling water. Add sugar if you like. Keep in mind that boiling karkade too long strips its qualities and the tea turns a dingy gray. The cold method: do everything as in the hot method, but add ice cubes to the finished drink. Another cold method: steep the karkade petals in cold water for 8 hours.
