Everyday Fresh Apple Compote

Just like grandma used to make! Simple, quick, and so tasty! Everyone knows that no matter how pricey the boxed juice you buy, nothing beats homemade apple compote. You can make compote from any fruit or berries, even dried ones — but the most popular and, hands down, the most delicious is apple. And if you cut back on the sugar, it fits right into any diet. For a prettier color, you can always stir in a natural tint, like a splash of syrup, jam, or chokeberry or cranberry juice.

  • So, wash the apples well, even if they were just picked from the top of the tree in your own backyard. As for me, I prefer to use only the best ingredients in everything I cook — it makes everything taste so much better. Cut the clean fruit into 8 wedges and cut out the core and seeds. Then put them in a pot, cover with cold water, and set it over medium heat. Add a little sugar right away (this helps draw out the flavor). Wait for the compote to come to a boil, add the rest of the sugar, stir, and immediately take it off the heat. Remember, the longer you boil compote, the fewer vitamins are left! Be sure to let it steep for about 30 minutes. Then pour it into cups and serve chilled! For my child, I strain the compote through a sieve, since he adores "sweet apple water."
