Cooking method

    Boil the potatoes, carrots, and eggs until tender, then cool and peel them.

    Clean the mushrooms and cut them into medium pieces. Peel the onion and dice it small.

    Sauté the onion and mushrooms in oil over high heat for about 5 minutes, salting the mushrooms as they cook.

    Transfer the onion and mushrooms to a plate and let them cool.

    Grate the potatoes on the coarse side of a grater.

    Grate the eggs on the coarse side of a grater.

    Grate the carrots on the coarse side of a grater.

    Rinse the dill and parsley, dry them, and chop finely.

    Cut the sausage into rounds about 1/4 inch (5 mm) thick and cut out decorations for the pig — "ears," "hooves," a "snout," and a "tail."

    Set a 6-inch (16 cm) ring mold on a plate. Layer the salad ingredients in this order: potatoes, mayonnaise, salt, pepper, mushrooms and onions, carrots, mayonnaise, sausage, herbs, mayonnaise, eggs, mayonnaise, cheese. Cover the surface with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour so the layers meld.

    Decorate the salad with the cut-out sausage pieces. Poke nostrils into the "snout." Use whole allspice berries for the piglet's "eyes."
