Fluffy Skillet Rice
Simple, super tasty, quick, and perfect for any day! This fluffy skillet rice is made from just two ingredients — the rice itself and onion. It's an ideal side for any occasion, and easy to vary to taste by adding other vegetables, mushrooms, herbs, or seasonings. A quick, meatless pilaf!
Cooking method
-
Step 1:
How do you make fluffy skillet rice? Gather your ingredients. Peel the onion and rinse it in cold water. With a sharp knife, chop the onion finely, wetting the blade in cold water to keep your eyes from watering.
-
Step 2:
Pour a little vegetable oil into a hot skillet and add the chopped onion. Fry the onion until golden, stirring now and then so it doesn't burn — a wooden spatula makes this easy.
-
Step 3:
While the onion cooks, measure out the rice and rinse it several times in cold water, then drain it well in a colander.
-
Step 4:
Once the onion is golden, add the rinsed rice to the pan. Stir and fry everything together for 3 to 4 minutes.
-
Step 5:
Add a little salt and your spices to the rice. For a nice yellow color, you can add a pinch of turmeric. Stir everything well.
-
Step 6:
Pour the hot water into the pan. Stir and bring it to a boil, then cover, reduce the heat to its lowest setting, and let it cook for about 10 to 15 minutes so the rice absorbs the liquid.
-
Step 7:
As soon as the water is absorbed, turn off the heat and let the rice rest, covered, for another 15 minutes. Then serve it hot. This rice side goes with all kinds of dishes. Enjoy!
- Most of us cook rice by simply boiling it in a pot. But why not try a new approach — in a skillet? This rice works as a dish on its own or as a side for meat or fish. When you fry the onion, you can add other vegetables like carrots, tomatoes, or broccoli, which make the rice tastier and more nutritious. Use a heavy-bottomed or nonstick skillet so the rice doesn't scorch. To keep the rice from turning to mush, always use a 1:2 ratio — two parts water to one part rice. For extra aroma, you can toss in a few whole garlic cloves while it cooks, then fish them out once the rice is done.
