- Start by rinsing the chicken legs and patting them dry with a paper towel. In a separate bowl, mix the salt, pepper, and spices, then roll the legs in the mixture. Peel and wash the potatoes and cut them into medium pieces or wedges — don't cut them too small, or they'll fall apart while cooking. Sprinkle the potatoes with a little salt. Peel the onion and rinse it under cold running water so your eyes don't sting while you slice it, then chop it. Set the slow cooker to "Sauté" (or "Fry") and pour in a little vegetable oil. Let it heat up, then add the chicken legs and brown them on all sides — this takes about 15–20 minutes. You want a golden crust on the outside only, with the meat still raw inside. Next, add the chopped onion and the potato pieces on top of the browned chicken. Switch the slow cooker to "Bake" for 40 minutes. Twenty minutes in, open the lid and gently stir with a wooden spoon, then close it and let the dish finish for the remaining time. If it already looks nearly done when you stir, you can cut the second stretch a little short — it all depends on your slow cooker's power. A fragrant aroma is another sign it's ready. While the dish finishes, set the table, slice some bread, and, if you like, cut up fresh vegetables or a salad. A sour-cream or garlic sauce also pairs beautifully and rounds out the flavor. As soon as the slow cooker beeps, plate the legs and potatoes right away and serve hot. Sprinkle with fresh chopped herbs before serving. Enjoy!
