- Cook the rice ahead of time in salted water according to the package directions. 2. Peel the carrots and onion. Grate the carrots on the coarse side of a box grater and finely chop the onion. 3. Shred the cabbage. 4. Dice the tomatoes. 5. Melt the butter in a large skillet, add the onion, and cook for 5 minutes. 6. Add the carrots and cook everything together until softened. 7. Add the ground meat along with the salt and pepper. 8. Stir well and cook over medium heat until all the liquid has evaporated. 9. Add the tomatoes, stir, and simmer for 7 minutes. 10. Now add the cabbage and stir again. Cover the skillet and simmer until the cabbage is tender. 11. Once the cabbage is nearly soft, stir in the rice and cook everything together for another 5 minutes. 12. Sprinkle the finished dish with fresh chopped herbs. Enjoy!
