Braised Meat with Vegetables in a Slow Cooker
The simplest, tastiest, and quickest dish for a hearty dinner! Meat with vegetables in a slow cooker is a great choice when you don't have time to stand over the stove. Just prep the meat and vegetables, and the slow cooker does the rest — and the braised vegetables and meat come out wonderfully flavorful!
Cooking method
-
Step 1:
How do you braise meat with vegetables in a slow cooker? Gather the ingredients. Almost any meat works with this mix of vegetables: beef, pork, turkey, rabbit. I'm using chicken. Prep the vegetables: wash them (a brush works well for the carrots and potatoes) and peel them.
-
Step 2:
Cut the carrots into rounds. If they're large, halve or quarter the rounds to speed up cooking.
-
Step 3:
Finely shred the cabbage with a knife or a shredder.
-
Step 4:
Finely chop the onion.
-
Step 5:
Cut the washed, peeled potatoes into medium-sized pieces.
-
Step 6:
Cut the chicken (or whatever meat you like) into small pieces. For extra vegetables, you can use fresh peas and beans, or frozen if that's what you have on hand. They boost the flavor and add extra vitamins. If you're using peas in the pod, choose sugar snap peas — their pods have no tough inner membrane.
-
Step 7:
Put everything in the slow cooker insert and pour in enough water to cover the contents halfway. Add spices to taste. Set it to the "Stew" program for 2 hours.
-
Step 8:
When it beeps, call everyone to the table and serve it hot with fresh herbs. Enjoy!
- A slow cooker is a lifesaver in a busy home. Thanks to it, you get more free time for rest, self-care, and fun while your helper cooks lunch or dinner for the family. Braised potatoes, cabbage, and meat is one of those simple dishes you can easily make in a slow cooker with next to no hands-on time.
- Keep in mind that the cooking time and setting given here are approximate. Every slow cooker works a little differently, and even identical models from the same brand can have their own quirks. Before you make a new dish in yours, read the manual, then start by cooking dishes you already know before moving on to new ones, dialing in the setting and time for your own machine.
- Keep in mind that how you cut the carrot changes the final result: grated carrot breaks down into the dish as it cooks and blends in evenly, while carrot cut into strips or cubes holds its shape.
- If you're using a pre-made spice blend, be sure to check the ingredient list on the package. These blends often already contain salt, so factor that in or you risk over-salting the dish.
