Stewed Cabbage with Chicken and Carrots
A hearty, warm cabbage dish with chicken breast. It's just as good for a holiday table as it is for an everyday meal. Don't over-fry the chicken and vegetables — cook them only until the meat is lightly browned, so the finished stewed cabbage takes on a bright orange color.
Cooking method
-
Step 1:
To make this delicious stewed cabbage with chicken, gather all the ingredients from the list. Wash the vegetables and peel the onion and carrot. You can use any part of the chicken — including wings or bone-in thighs — but for this recipe we'll use chicken breast. For seasoning, we'll use a little tomato paste and some chicken spice blend, plus vegetable oil for frying the chicken.
-
Step 2:
Cut the chicken breast into large cubes.
-
Step 3:
Pour vegetable oil into the bottom of the pot, heat it, and add the diced chicken.
-
Step 4:
Fry the chicken for 5 minutes over high heat, then add the spices and keep frying for another 5 minutes.
-
Step 5:
While the chicken fries, dice the onion and grate the carrot.
-
Step 6:
Add the onion and carrot to the pot with the chicken, stir, and cook over medium heat for another 5 minutes.
-
Step 7:
Season the chicken, onion, and carrot with salt and continue cooking for another 5 minutes.
-
Step 8:
Meanwhile, finely shred the cabbage.
-
Step 9:
Add the tomato paste to the pot and stir.
-
Step 10:
After the tomato paste, add the shredded cabbage to the pot.
-
Step 11:
Stir the cabbage together with the rest of the ingredients.
-
Step 12:
Pour the water into the pot with the cabbage and chicken, stir well again, bring to a boil over high heat, then lower the heat.
-
Step 13:
Cover the pot and simmer the cabbage and chicken for 30 minutes over low heat.
-
Step 14:
Serve the stewed cabbage and chicken hot — on its own or with a side such as rice, buckwheat, or potatoes.
