Cooking method

Cooking time: 10 min
  1. Step 1:

    Step 1

How do you make hot dogs at home? Gather all the ingredients. You can bake the hot dog buns yourself or use store-bought ones. I more often use store-bought buns for this recipe. If possible, use homemade frankfurters, or whichever kind you usually buy.

  2. Step 2:

    Step 2

Cover the frankfurters with cold water and put them on the stove. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat, and cook until done.

  3. Step 3:

    Step 3

While the frankfurters cook, prepare the rest of the ingredients. Peel the onion and wash the tomato. To make the finished hot dog look more colorful and bright, I used red onion. You can use any cucumbers — salted, pickled, or even fresh work well. This recipe used pickled cucumbers. Cut the tomato and cucumber into thin rounds. If the tomato is large, cut it into half-moons.

  4. Step 4:

    Step 4

Warm the hot dog buns in the microwave or oven. The microwave is more convenient and faster — about 40–50 seconds.

  5. Step 5:

    Step 5

Rinse the lettuce leaves and pat them dry with paper towels. Cut each bun lengthwise without cutting all the way through (to make a kind of pocket). Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise inside the bun (optional). Lay in 2–3 lettuce leaves.

  6. Step 6:

    Step 6

Next, add a few onion rings and the cucumber and tomato rounds to the bun.

  7. Step 7:

    Step 7

Lay the cooked frankfurter down the middle.

  8. Step 8:

    Step 8

Drizzle with ketchup and mustard. A sweet-and-sour mustard is perfect for this.

  9. Step 9:

    Step 9

Sprinkle crispy fried onions on top. Done!

  10. Step 10:

    Step 10

Serve while the bun and frankfurter are still warm.

  • You can warm the hot dog buns and frankfurters in the oven. That takes about 10 minutes (go by your own oven). Very tasty hot dogs can be made outdoors with friends over a grill. Buns and frankfurters cooked over coals are very aromatic, with a subtle campfire scent. And they cook much faster. Enjoy!
  • To keep your eyes from stinging when you cut the onion, rinse the onion and the knife in cold water. The cutting board won't absorb the unpleasant onion smell if you rub it with a piece of lemon before cutting.
  • Choose juicy but firm tomatoes. Soft ones don't hold their shape well; during slicing and cooking they fall apart into a shapeless mush and spoil the look of the dish.
  • It's better to make the mayonnaise yourself. It'll be tastier and healthier. See some interesting homemade mayonnaise recipes here. You can also use sour cream or plain yogurt as a dressing instead of mayonnaise. Use them on their own or mixed with mayonnaise in any proportion to taste — that lowers the calorie count of the dish.
