Fresh apple compote in a pot
Delicious and good for you — a perfect way to round out lunch! Apple compote is always a treat. And when fresh homegrown apples are in season, don't pass up the chance to make this drink for your family. Here's how to do it.
Cooking method
-
Step 1:
How do you make compote from fresh apples? To make apple compote, gather all the ingredients. Use ripe, sweet-tart apples. Choose firm fruit — apples that are too soft will fall apart as they cook. Red apples give a pink compote, while lighter varieties make a paler one. The more apples you use, the more concentrated the finished compote will be.
-
Step 2:
Rinse the apples under running water to clean them, then cut them into slices, removing the cores. Put the sliced apples into the pot you'll cook the compote in. Use a non-reactive pot, such as enameled or non-stick — aluminum won't work here.
-
Step 3:
Cover the sliced apples with water and set the pot over the heat. Bring it all to a boil.
-
Step 4:
Add the sugar to the boiling apples. Adjust the amount to your taste, going by how the apples themselves taste. If the apples are tart, you may need to add a little more. Stir the compote until the sugar fully dissolves.
-
Step 5:
Simmer the compote for 2–3 minutes and take it off the heat. Cover the pot and let it steep until completely cooled.
-
Step 6:
Strain the cooled, steeped compote through a fine sieve and pour it into a pitcher. In summer, it's best to chill the compote in the refrigerator before serving.
-
Step 7:
Enjoy!
- You can use this recipe to make compote from any berries or fruit — and even make various combinations of them or use frozen fruit.
- This easygoing drink is a hit with grown-ups and kids alike.
- To deepen the color of apple compote, you can add a few black currants or chokeberries.
- For cooking, it's best to use filtered or bottled water with a neutral taste. If you use tap water, keep in mind it can give the drink an off, characteristic flavor.
