  • How do you make a mushroom and crab stick salad?
  • The salad is built in layers, with each layer spread with mayonnaise: Layer 1: chopped crab sticks. Layer 2: mushrooms sautéed with onion. Layer 3: finely grated eggs. Layer 4: finely grated cheese. Don't spread mayonnaise on the top layer. Garnish however you like.
  • Homemade mayonnaise is the way to go — tastier and better for you. Check out the interesting homemade mayonnaise recipes here. You can also dress the salad with sour cream or plain yogurt instead of mayonnaise, or mix either one with mayo in any ratio you like to cut down on calories.
  • How do you buy crab sticks the right way? Always check the use-by date. Surimi (minced white fish) should be the first item on the ingredient list. Important: don't buy them if there's frost on the package — that's a sign they've been refrozen. Fresh crab sticks should be free of gray or yellow spots, firm, and slightly moist. If they feel sticky, they've gone bad.
  • How do you hard-boil eggs? To keep them from cracking, put them in cold water and set them over low heat. Boil for 9 minutes once the water comes to a boil, then run them under cold water to cool — the sudden temperature change makes them easier to peel.
