Cooking method

Cooking time: 40 min
  1. Step 1:

    Step 1

Get all the ingredients ready for making a cheese appetizer shaped like little Christmas trees.

  2. Step 2:

    Step 2

Grate the hard cheese on a fine grater. A firm cheese like cheddar works well for this appetizer. Very soft, delicate cheeses won't do — they're very hard to grate, and the appetizer would lack a savory bite.

  3. Step 3:

    Step 3

Transfer the grated cheese to a small deep bowl. Peel the garlic, press it through a garlic press, and add it to the grated cheese. Add the mayonnaise to the bowl as well and mix. In this appetizer I really like using mayonnaise made with quail eggs. You can adjust the amount of mayonnaise, since different cheeses may need a little more or a little less.

  4. Step 4:

    Step 4

Mound the resulting cheese mixture onto each round cracker and shape it into a cone.

  5. Step 5:

    Step 5

Wash the parsley, pat it dry with paper towels, and chop it finely. This chopped herb will be the Christmas trees' needles.

  6. Step 6:

    Step 6

Break the pomegranate into seeds — these will be the red Christmas-tree ornaments.

  7. Step 7:

    Step 7

Take the first cracker appetizer, sprinkle it with chopped parsley, and stick on the slivered almonds and pomegranate seeds in a random pattern. Do the same with the remaining cracker appetizers. Arrange the finished Christmas trees on a dish and serve them at the holiday table.

  • This isn't so much a specific appetizer recipe as a presentation idea. You can make a completely different filling using, say, soft cream cheese, or crab sticks with boiled eggs — whatever your favorite ingredients are. From there it's up to your imagination: chopped herbs can serve as the trees' needles, and for the "ornaments" you can use finely chopped red bell pepper, red caviar, or tiny rounds of carrot. This amount of ingredients made just 6 Christmas trees. But mine are very large, since the crackers are 6 cm across. To make more trees, just use smaller crackers for the bases.
