- Pick up everything this great recipe calls for and get creative — you're about to build some seriously tasty little party skewers (Italian-style). Personally, I like to use wooden skewers. For one thing, they're a natural material; for another, the vegetables and fruit threaded onto them don't slide around the way they do on, say, plastic skewers. There are also metal skewers — usually the prettiest of the bunch — but the ingredients tend to slip off those too, unless you anchor the bottom with a small piece of bread. By the way, the bread in these mini-bites is entirely optional; even without it, this light snack disappears fast.
- Option one: thread a slice of cheese, an olive, a shrimp, and a slice of lemon onto the skewer. Option two: a slice of cheese, a pickled mushroom, a piece of ham, a piece of tomato, and a slice of lemon. Or: a slice of cucumber, a piece of cheese, a tomato, and a shrimp. From there, let your imagination run and build your own combinations to suit your taste.
