  • You don't need fresh fruit to make a wonderful treat for kids and grown-ups — you can buy frozen fruit or berries (plums, strawberries, cherries, raspberries, and so on). Better yet, you don't have to cook them at all. Here's how I make compote for my family: I buy frozen fruit or berries and take them out of the bag or carton. I let the fruit sit for no more than 15 minutes so it doesn't fully thaw. Then I rinse it in cooled boiled water, put it into glasses, and pour warm syrup over it. To make the syrup, I dissolve sugar in 1.5 to 2 cups of water and bring it to a boil. For a richer flavor, you can stir a little wine (muscat, port, etc.), brandy, or liqueur into the syrup. Naturally, the boozy version should be served only to adults.
