Cooking method

Cooking time: 10 min
  1. Step 1:

    Step 1

How do you fry French toast with egg and milk? Crack the egg into a small bowl and whisk it lightly.

  2. Step 2:

    Step 2

Add the milk to the egg and whisk again until smooth.

  3. Step 3:

    Step 3

Cut the bread into slices about 5/8 inch (1.5 cm) thick. Day-old bread is best, since it's a little dried out.

  4. Step 4:

    Step 4

Dip the bread slices into the milk mixture on both sides so they soak it up well but don't go soggy.

  5. Step 5:

    Step 5

Pour a little vegetable oil into a hot skillet and lay in the soaked bread. Fry on one side for 1–2 minutes, until golden.

  6. Step 6:

    Step 6

Then flip and fry the other side the same way. These cook fast, so stay by the stove and keep an eye on them so they don't burn.

  7. Step 7:

    Step 7

Line a plate with paper towels. As each slice comes out of the pan, set it on the towels to blot off the excess oil. Sprinkle the hot toast with a little sugar right away. Serve with a cup of hot tea. Enjoy!

  • These come together in a flash — truly a last-minute fix. If you often end up with leftover bread, this is an easy way to use it up, and honestly it turns out even better with slightly stale bread than fresh. Some people stir the sugar right into the milk mixture, but I don't like to: sugar doesn't dissolve well in cold milk, so most of it ends up at the bottom of the bowl and the toast comes out barely sweet. Better to sprinkle as much sugar over the top as you like. Serve them with jam, honey, or preserves on the side. If you'd rather skip the sugar altogether, make a savory version instead — just add a little salt to the milk mixture. Even a beginner cook or a teenager can pull these off without any trouble. Have fun with it — they're delicious!
