- Cut the bacon into strips and fry it over high heat until crisp. Add the sugar to the bacon and cook for half a minute. Finely chop the onion and add it to the bacon. Cook for about four minutes. Peel the apple and cut it into small cubes. Remove the outer leaves from the cabbage and shred it. Add the apple pieces and shredded cabbage to the bacon and onion. Pour the vinegar over the cabbage, and add the seasonings and salt. Then pour in the broth you prepared earlier. Simmer everything for at least 40 minutes over low heat, stirring constantly. For a sweet-and-sour flavor, you can stir in half a cup of berry jam made from a tart berry about five minutes before it's done. Follow this simple recipe and you'll easily make German-style cabbage.
