No-Bake Stovetop Cake Layers with Dulce de Leche
No oven? No problem. This cake is proof that you can pull off a real celebration dessert right on the stovetop. Skillet cake layers are a lifesaver when you don't have (or don't want to use) an oven, and honestly, "I have no oven" stops being an excuse the moment you realize everyone has a stove. Beginner cooks, this one's for you: some of the simplest, tastiest, and fastest cake layers and frosting you'll ever make.
Cooking method
-
Step 1:
Gather the ingredients for the dough. It's easiest to measure everything out ahead of time.
-
Step 2:
Gather the ingredients for the frosting. Again, measure everything out first to make things go smoothly.
-
Step 3:
Sift the flour into a mixing bowl.
-
Step 4:
Make a well in the center and crack in the egg.
-
Step 5:
Pour in the condensed milk.
-
Step 6:
If the condensed milk is thick, warming it slightly makes the dough easier to knead.
-
Step 7:
Stir the vinegar into the baking soda to activate it, then add it to the bowl.
-
Step 8:
Knead into a dough.
-
Step 9:
Roll the dough into a log.
-
Step 10:
Divide it into 8 pieces. If your frying pan is on the small side, make more, smaller layers.
-
Step 11:
Roll each piece out and trim it into a round, using a plate as a guide sized to your pan.
-
Step 12:
Save the dough scraps for extra layers, or fry them as-is and crush them into crumbs. The crumbs make a great cake topping, and they also work as a coating for sweet fried treats.
-
Step 13:
Make 8 layers in all.
-
Step 14:
Fry in a hot, dry skillet over low heat. No oil needed.
-
Step 15:
Once the underside turns golden, flip it over.
-
Step 16:
Fry the rest of the layers the same way.
-
Step 17:
For the frosting, beat the dulce de leche together with room-temperature butter until smooth.
-
Step 18:
Stack the layers one at a time on a serving plate, spreading frosting between each.
-
Step 19:
Press each layer down gently onto the one below.
-
Step 20:
Frost the top of the cake generously.
-
Step 21:
Decorate however you like, or simply dust the top with crumbs made from the leftover dough.
-
Step 22:
Refrigerate for a couple of hours so the layers can soak up the frosting.
-
Step 23:
Your stovetop layer cake is ready.
-
Step 24:
Slice it up, serve, and dig in.
- Enjoy!
