French Toast with Cream and Honey

French toast is just the thing to power you through the day! Prep time: 20 minutes. I only recently realized that the treat I sometimes spoil my family with for breakfast is that famous classic—French toast. Golden slices of bread fried in egg are the perfect way to start the day, and they're so easy to make. So here's my simple little recipe.

  • First, make the custard you'll dip the bread in: crack the eggs into a deep bowl, then add the cream and powdered sugar. Two tablespoons is plenty, but add more if you like it sweeter. You can use regular sugar instead of powdered—the crystals will dissolve in the custard or melt during cooking. Whisk everything together well by hand or with a mixer. Set a skillet over medium heat. While it warms up, prep the bread: cut a loaf of white bread (slightly stale is even better) into ½-inch (1 cm) slices. Pour the oil into the pan, and once it's hot, dip each slice of bread into the custard and fry on both sides until golden. Your classic French toast is ready—now just serve it. Put two slices on each plate and drizzle with honey. Add your favorite fruit, cut into small pieces. Jam or whipped cream are great alongside, too. Enjoy!
