  • This is a perfect main course for a lunch with friends. Beef braised in beer turns out tender and full of flavor, and while it does take a good while to cook, the result is well worth a spot on your table. Start by cutting the beef into small cubes and dredging each piece in flour, salt, and pepper—it helps to mix those together on a flat plate before you bread the meat. Then sear the beef in a skillet along with thin slices of bacon. Once the meat has a nice crust, transfer it to a deep pot and add onion rings that you've already fried soft in vegetable oil, plus the minced garlic. Stir in the sugar and pour in a little over a cup of Guinness. Cover the pot and simmer over medium heat for 2 1/2 hours, stirring now and then and topping up with water or beer as needed. When the beef is done, sprinkle it with fresh herbs. It's best served with boiled potatoes or rice. Enjoy!
