Homemade White Russian Cocktail

A very tasty coffee cocktail with cream. The White Russian is a fairly strong cocktail, thanks mainly to the vodka and coffee liqueur. It's customarily served in short glasses filled with ice cubes.

Cooking method

Cooking time: 10 min
  1. Step 1:

    Step 1

Before making the cocktail, first prepare the ice and chill the glasses. In this recipe I used store-bought ice. You can make it at home: pour drinking water into ice molds and put them in the freezer until fully frozen. It's customary to serve a White Russian in rocks glasses (i.e., short, wide, thick-bottomed glasses, the kind whiskey on the rocks is served in).

  2. Step 2:

    Step 2

Measure out the vodka, coffee liqueur, and cream. I used heavy cream (30%) in the recipe.

  3. Step 3:

    Step 3

Fill the glasses almost to the top with ice cubes.

  4. Step 4:

    Step 4

If your ice cubes are too large, you can crush them a bit. Put the cubes you need in a thick plastic bag and break the big pieces with a kitchen mallet.

  5. Step 5:

    Step 5

In a thin stream, pour the vodka into the glass as the first layer.

  6. Step 6:

    Step 6

Then pour in the coffee liqueur.

  7. Step 7:

    Step 7

And make the cream the last layer. Pour it in very carefully so the line between the liqueur-and-vodka and the cream is preserved as much as possible - that way the cocktail looks incredibly beautiful when served. Put a cocktail straw in each glass.

  8. Step 8:

    Step 8

The White Russian is ready - you can serve it.

  9. Step 9:

    Step 9

Right before drinking, stir the cocktail in your glass with the straw to mix all the layers together, and enjoy this coffee-and-cream drink!

  • The Black Russian came first, in 1949; its main ingredients were coffee liqueur and vodka. Later, in the 1960s, the first mention of the White Russian appears - it has everything the Black Russian does, plus cream. By modern recipes, the cream should be fresh and unwhipped. The cocktail became especially popular after the film "The Big Lebowski." The amount of alcohol in the glass can and should be adjusted to your taste and preferences. To me the cocktail seemed a bit strong, so the next time I left out the vodka entirely - it turned out to be a nice variation on the White Russian with a milder taste. Find the proportions that work best for you and enjoy the unique flavor!
