How did the name "vodka" come about? It's believed that the word "vodka" appeared in writing (on an official document of national scope!) in a decree of Elizabeth I, the Russian Empress. That happened in June 1750. However, the word "vodka" didn't come into wide use in those years. The spirit it referred to was for a long time called "pennik," then "samogon" (moonshine), then "polugar." And moonshine-making was practiced all across Russia. That's why the coining of the word "vodka" is credited not to Elizabeth I but to Alexander Pushkin. It was the great Russian poet who described, in one of his works (namely "The Captain's Daughter"), a scene in which his characters drink so-called "anise vodka." There was also a scene in "Eugene Onegin" that mentions "Russian vodka." So, thanks to the poet, the name "vodka" caught on among the people and came into active use.
By way of clarification: vodka is a Polish word meaning "little water." In writing, "vodka" was mentioned in the court records of one of the Polish towns in 1405.
So where did the chemist Mendeleev come in alongside vodka, and why is vodka-making associated with his name? The myth that a supposedly Russian chemist invented the 40-proof vodka "Moscow Special" was spread by Pokhlebkin in his book "A History of Vodka." In reality it's just a myth — Mendeleev has nothing to do with vodka; he never invented any vodka recipe.
