  1. Step 1:

    Step 1

How do you make creamy cheese sauce? Get your ingredients ready. Parmesan is a hard cheese, and grating it at home is rather tedious and time-consuming, so it's worth buying it pre-grated. If you can't find Parmesan, substitute any other hard cheese.

  2. Step 2:

    Step 2

Melt the butter in a skillet over the lowest heat so it doesn't burn.

  3. Step 3:

    Step 3

Gently add the wheat flour. Stirring, cook the flour in the butter until it turns golden.

  4. Step 4:

    Step 4

Carefully start adding the cream. Pour it in a little at a time, stirring the sauce right away with a spatula so no lumps form. Keep going until all the cream is in.

  5. Step 5:

    Step 5

Into the nearly finished sauce, add salt (keeping in mind how salty the cheese is) and ground black pepper. You can also add a little grated nutmeg for a richer flavor and aroma. Stir in the grated Parmesan until the sauce is smooth.

  6. Step 6:

    Step 6

If the sauce seems too thick, you can add a little more cream or some milk to reach the consistency you want. It's best served right after it's made, though it's also good warm or chilled. Enjoy!

  • For the dish to come out well and taste good, be sure to use fresh, high-quality cream. Stick with products you know — choose a trusted brand. I used 20% cream; it's not a good idea to use low-fat cream, since it may curdle and leave the sauce unappetizing. The same standards — quality, freshness, and being all-natural — apply to the butter. You can use this sauce in other dishes too, such as pizza. Instead of Parmesan, you can use a similar bold-flavored hard cheese (Grana Padano, Rokiškis, Džiugas, or Swiss).
