  1. Step 1:

    Step 1

How do you make Chinese-style sweet-and-sour pineapple sauce? Very fast and easy! First, gather the ingredients. Drain the syrup from a can of pineapple. Instead of table vinegar, you can use rice, apple, or grape vinegar, or substitute lemon juice. Adjust the amount of vinegar and the tartness of the sauce to your taste.

  2. Step 2:

    Step 2

In a saucepan, combine the ketchup, soy sauce, half of the pineapple syrup, the vinegar, and the sugar. Set the saucepan over low heat and, stirring, bring the mixture to a boil.

  3. Step 3:

    Step 3

Stir the starch into the remaining pineapple syrup, breaking up any lumps. You can use pineapple juice in place of the syrup if you prefer.

  4. Step 4:

    Step 4

If you have canned pineapple rings, cut them into small pieces. Mine were already cut, so they didn't need any further chopping — I just halved some of the larger pieces.

  5. Step 5:

    Step 5

Add the cut pineapple pieces and warm everything together for 1 minute.

  6. Step 6:

    Step 6

Stirring constantly, pour the starch-and-pineapple-syrup mixture into the saucepan in a thin stream. The sauce will start to thicken right away. Bring it back to a boil and cook, stirring, for 30 seconds. The sauce comes out thick but still pourable. You can adjust the amount and consistency to your liking — reduce it further to thicken it, or thin it out with pineapple syrup or juice.

  7. Step 7:

    Step 7

The sauce is ready. Serve it with meat, fish, or poultry, chilled or warm. Enjoy!

  • Unless the author specifies otherwise, vinegar in these recipes is 9% strength by default.
  • You can use tomato paste in place of the ketchup.
  • Since everyone's tolerance for salt, sweetness, bitterness, heat, acidity, and spice is different, always add spices and seasonings to your own taste! If you're using a seasoning for the first time, keep in mind that some are especially easy to overdo (chili pepper, for instance).
