Processed Cheese and Crab Stick Roll
Pretty, tasty, budget-friendly, and simple to make! A roll of processed cheese and crab sticks makes a wonderful cold appetizer for any celebration, or a great breakfast with a cup of coffee. It's easy to put together from ingredients you can buy at any store.
Cooking method
-
Step 1:
How do you make a processed cheese and crab stick roll? Gather all the ingredients you'll need for a roll of processed cheese filled with egg and crab sticks. Put the frozen crab sticks on the bottom shelf of the fridge ahead of time until they're fully thawed. Boil the eggs for 12 minutes after the water comes to a boil, over medium heat. Cover with cold water and cool completely.
-
Step 2:
Peel the eggs and separate them into whites and yolks. Fresh eggs are usually hard to peel, so crack the shell and lower the egg into water and let it sit a moment. The water gets under the membrane and the eggs peel without any trouble.
-
Step 3:
In one bowl, grate the crab sticks on a fine grater, add a spoonful of sour cream and the crumbled yolks. Salt it and mix well.
-
Step 4:
In another bowl, grate the egg whites and the peeled garlic on a fine grater. Add the remaining sour cream, salt, and mix.
-
Step 5:
Unwrap the processed cheese and lay the wedges in a single row in a sturdy plastic bag. Put the cheese on the microwave turntable. At full power, heat the cheese for 30 seconds and check it. If the cheese has softened, you can take it out — or, without removing it from the bag, roll it out into a rectangle. If the cheese is still firm, keep heating it in 20-second bursts, checking each time.
-
Step 6:
Cut the bag open across the top and fold it back to expose the top of the cheese sheet. Spread the egg-white filling over the cheese in an even layer.
-
Step 7:
Over the egg-white filling, spread the crab stick filling in an even layer.
-
Step 8:
Finely chop the fresh herbs and sprinkle them on top.
-
Step 9:
Using the film the cheese rectangle and filling are sitting on, roll up the roll. Wrap it in the same film and put it in the freezer for 2 hours to firm up — but don't let it freeze solid. Once thawed, a frozen roll just starts to crumble and there's no fixing it. If you're not sure you'll remember to take it out in time, it's better to just refrigerate it for a few hours or overnight.
-
Step 10:
Then slice the processed cheese roll and serve. Enjoy.
- You can replace the sour cream with plain, unsweetened yogurt.
- How do you buy good crab sticks? Be sure to check the product's use-by date. Surimi (minced white fish) should be first on the ingredient list. Important! Don't buy the product if it has frost on it — that's a sign it was refrozen. Fresh sticks should be free of gray and yellow spots, springy, and slightly moist. If the product is sticky, it's spoiled.
- Keep in mind that microwaves don't all work the same. The cooking time and recommended power may differ from those given in the recipe. Read your appliance's manual and account for the quirks of your own machine.
