  • My kids didn't escape the "American food" craze either. While my youngest was stamping on the floor and yelling that he wanted to go to McDonald's, I was scrambling for a way to avoid daily trips there. No argument about the downsides of fast food got through — his trump card was always "Everybody goes!" My comebacks ("Who's everybody? People with money to burn, who don't mind their own health, and... Americans") didn't help. He was bound and determined to be American, at least for a while. So I went hunting for a recipe for some wholesome American dish — and found one. Kind people helped out and even sent along some great photos. One day I made this creamy tomato soup with chicken, and the whole family gave it five stars. The star ingredient is the tomatoes — peel them first by scalding them well with boiling water and then pressing them through a sieve into a purée. Run the cooked chicken through a meat grinder. Hold the tomato purée and ground chicken together over low heat in a pot for 10 minutes. Then add all the spices, salt to taste, and pour in the olive oil. Stir and cook for exactly 1 minute. Cut the mozzarella into small cubes and rinse the basil. Ladle the soup into bowls and top each with the cheese cubes and herbs.
