How to Boil Large King Prawns the Slow Way

Learn how to cook king prawns the right way! King prawns are my favorite — their flavor is more delicate, with a hint of sweetness. I also love that they aren't tiny, which counts for something too. You can cook them with pepper, bay leaf, or garlic for extra flavor, but here I'll walk you through the classic method, and you can experiment with add-ins from there.

  • First, thaw the prawns: move them from the freezer to the refrigerator and leave them for 2 hours. I don't recommend thawing them in the microwave — let the process take a little longer, and the prawns will keep their nice appearance.
  • Pour water into a pot at a 1:3 ratio — that's 3 liters — and set it over the heat. Add salt to the boiling water, drop in the king prawns, and cook for about 7 minutes from the moment the water comes back to a boil. If the prawns are on the larger side, cook them a little longer, but no more than 10 minutes, or the meat can overcook and turn tough.
  • Drain the cooked prawns in a colander, let the water run off, peel away the shells and heads — and that's it, time to dig in!
  • Serve them with your favorite dipping sauce.
  • Wishing you delicious prawns and a great mood!
