  • Here's an unusual recipe that will delight you and your family for seasons to come, and let you surprise everyone with something new. Wash the tomatoes, and rinse the parsley and bell pepper thoroughly under running water, then let them drain. Wash the apples, quarter them, and remove the seeds. Pack the tomatoes and apples into pre-sterilized jars. Tuck some parsley and a few slices of bell pepper down the sides of each jar for flavor. Fill each jar with boiling water and, after 10 minutes, drain it back into a saucepan. Repeat this once more to be safe. Pour fresh water into a saucepan, add the salt and sugar, and bring to a boil. Pour this hot syrup into the jars, add the vinegar, and screw on the lids. Wrap the jars in something warm, turn them upside down, and let them cool overnight. Store the jars somewhere cool. German-style tomatoes aren't a dish on their own but rather a companion to your main course — an unusual, wholesome, mellow blend of vegetables to round out any meal.
