A striking salad fit for a real general! It's sure to dress up the table for a special occasion!
Cooking method
-
Step 1:
The ingredients you'll need. Boil the beef, potatoes, carrots, and beets ahead of time.
-
Step 2:
Build the salad using a square ring mold set in the center of a plate. First layer: boil the potatoes in their skins, cool, peel, and grate on a coarse grater. Spread them on the bottom of the mold and pipe a lattice of mayonnaise over the top.
-
Step 3:
Second layer: boil the beef until tender, cool, and chop it finely. Mix it with half a garlic clove, pressed or finely minced, spread it over the potatoes, and add a mayonnaise lattice.
-
Step 4:
Third layer: boil the carrot until soft, cool, peel, and grate on a coarse grater. Mix it with the other half of the garlic clove, pressed or finely minced, spread it over the beef, and add a mayonnaise lattice.
-
Step 5:
Fourth layer: grate the hard cheese on a coarse grater, spread it over the carrot, and add a mayonnaise lattice.
-
Step 6:
Fifth layer: boil the beets until soft, cool, peel, and grate on a coarse grater. Spread them over the cheese and add a mayonnaise lattice.
-
Step 7:
You can coat the top more generously with mayonnaise or just pipe a pretty lattice. Garnish with pomegranate seeds. Chill the salad for an hour so the flavors meld, then carefully lift off the mold. Enjoy!
- This "General" salad with beets is one of those easy but festive layered salads. Many think of it as a "man's salad," since it's quite hearty and has a good layer of meat — but I doubt anyone would turn it down. You can make it in individual portions or in a large bowl, scaling up the ingredients accordingly. Garnish it with corn or pomegranate; pomegranate looks especially celebratory. The classic version is the simplest and the safest bet when you have a crowd and want to please everyone — it relies only on common, everyday ingredients.
