Pan-Fried French Toast
A delicious, super-quick snack! So many people love tasty French toast fried in an egg batter. I like to make it for breakfast on weekends — it leaves the whole family full and happy. The ingredients couldn't be more basic, but it comes out so good. Give it a try!
Cooking method
-
Step 1:
Before you start, get out a deep bowl that's easy to mix in. Crack the eggs into it.
-
Step 2:
Add a little sugar.
-
Step 3:
Then pour in just a splash — literally a couple of tablespoons — of milk. Whisk everything with a whisk or fork until smooth and a few small bubbles form. This works air into the mixture.
-
Step 4:
Cut the loaf into slices about 1/2 to 3/4 inch (1–2 cm) thick.
-
Step 5:
Dip each slice into the egg mixture on both sides.
-
Step 6:
Heat a skillet until hot, add a little vegetable oil, and lay in the egg-dipped slices. Fry for 1–2 minutes per side, until golden and appetizing.
-
Step 7:
Transfer the finished toast to a paper towel to blot off the excess oil. Enjoy it with tea or coffee — and for the kids, serve it with a glass of milk or hot cocoa. Enjoy!
- You don't have to use a French loaf for this — regular sliced white sandwich bread works just as well. Slightly stale bread is actually best: bread from yesterday or even the day before is easier to cut, and you can slice it thinner. Fresh, soft bread has to be cut into thicker pieces, and when soaked in the egg mixture the centers won't absorb it, so the middles come out dry. So another plus of this recipe is that it uses up dried-out white bread. Adjust the sugar to your taste. For those who prefer it savory, skip the sugar entirely and add a little salt to the egg mixture instead — you'll get savory French toast, and I'm sure that version has its fans too. Sweet French toast made this way is a great start to a busy day or a lovely family breakfast on a Sunday morning.
