Khvorost with kefir and vodka

Treat your family to a quick, delicious dessert! I remember my grandmother's khvorost—these crisp, golden fried dough ribbons—from childhood, always served with a cup of fresh milk. I make khvorost now too, just with a slightly different recipe—a splash of vodka makes them especially crispy. My kids love to munch on them. Give it a try; here's my recipe.

    1. Crack the egg into a roomy, deep bowl and whisk it with a pinch of salt.
    1. Pour in the kefir (the thicker the kefir, the less flour you'll need; thinner kefir may call for more), and stir.
    1. Add the vodka, stir, then add the sifted flour (again, you may need a bit more) and knead a smooth, elastic dough that doesn't stick to your hands.
    1. Roll the dough out into a thin sheet and cut it into strips (about 3/4 inch by 3 inches / 2 cm by 8 cm).
    1. Cut a slit down the center of each strip and pull one end through it a couple of times to twist it.
    1. Pour the vegetable oil into a heavy-bottomed saucepan and set it over the heat.
    1. Once the oil is hot, fry the khvorost until a nice golden color (don't overdo it—they cook quite fast, so keep an eye on them).
    1. Transfer the fried khvorost to paper towels. Once the excess oil is absorbed, dust with powdered sugar and serve.
  • Help yourself and enjoy!
